Highland Experience Tours is celebrating the achievement of one of its guides, Hugh Mackay, who has been honoured with the Rising Star Award at The Scottish Thistle Awards national final. As Scotland’s highest tourism accolade, the awards recognise those delivering exceptional hospitality and unforgettable visitor experiences.
The award marks an extraordinary first two years in tourism for Hugh, who joined the industry in early 2024 after serving with the Highlanders, 4th Battalion. His guiding career has been shaped by a deep love of Scotland, its history and its people.
An accomplished piper, Hugh has performed at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth and the coronation of King Charles. Today, he brings this musical heritage to his tours, offering guests live piping moments and playlists inspired by the landscapes they explore. These touches have quickly become a hallmark of his guiding style.
Judges praised Hugh for his warmth, intuitive storytelling and commitment to supporting local communities and businesses. They also recognised his passion for mental wellbeing and the meaningful moments he creates for guests. In just one year, he has led more than two hundred tours and earned over 150 five-star reviews. His authenticity and enthusiasm have made him a guest favourite and a proud ambassador for Highland Experience Tours.
Reflecting on the award, Hugh shared, “As a young man from the far north of Scotland, I’m honoured to be recognised in this moment that reflects my commitment to hospitality and tourism, and my passion for showcasing Scotland’s very best to every guest I have the privilege of welcoming on my tours.”
