For the very first time, a stage of the world-renowned Tour de France will be in Wales in 2027, marking a historic moment for the country. This landmark event is set to inspire cyclists and visitors from across the globe to discover Wales and include it in their future adventures.
This will be the largest free-to-spectate sporting event ever staged in the UK, offering a great opportunity to showcase Wales’ landscapes, culture and cycling offer to global audiences.
Wales offers some of the most spectacular and varied landscapes in the UK for cycling, from challenging climbs with switchbacks that will test the best, to family-friendly, traffic-free trails and long-distance routes for those looking for a real endurance challenge.
On Sunday 4 July 2027, Stage 3 of the men’s race will start in Mid Wales in Y Trallwng (Welshpool in Powys) and travel south, going through spa and market towns including Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells and Brecon before taking epic routes over Bannau Brycheiniog and then into the south Wales valleys and Caerphilly before ending in Cardiff.
In the final closing kilometres, the race is set to tackle two fan favourite climbs: Côte de Rhigos and Côte de Caerffili (Caerphilly). Fans can expect some spectacular racing as the world’s best test themselves on challenging roads beloved by Welsh cyclists. The race culminates with a showpiece finish in the capital, Caerdydd (Cardiff). This will be the final UK stage of the Grand Départ, bringing a nationwide celebration to a close and one of the largest free-to-attend sporting events ever hosted in the UK.
To coincide with the route reveal, Geraint Thomas OBE, two-time Olympic Champion and winner of the 2018 Tour de France, has been named Wales’ Cycling Ambassador. In the run-up to 2027, Geraint will work with Visit Wales to champion Wales’s world-class cycling offer: its road climbs, mountain biking, gravel, and family-friendly, traffic-free trails.
