The Great Dragon Count competition launches at the Royal Pavilion

Royal Pavilion, part of Brighton & Hove Museums, have dragons on show everywhere, from their ceilings, around the doorways, along the walls, and hiding in the smallest decorative details. Inspired by Chinoiserie design and created to impress royal guests, these creatures twist and coil throughout the palace.

For the first time in its 200-year history, a full count of these dragon designs is being carried out by a specialist. The figures range from large chandelier-holding sculptures to small, easily missed details. Visitors are invited to take part by guessing how many dragons are inside the Pavilion.

They will challenge visitors to the Royal Pavilion to explore carefully and count every dragon they can spot to enter a competition that will run for the duration of the exhibition, from 28 March to 1 November 2026.

Visitors (UK residents only) will be invited to write down their final total and contact details and submit the answer either in the box at the end of the tour or online on their special Great Dragon Count page on their website.

The closest answer to the real total will win a prize – to be announced.
