Crerar Hotels is highlighting apprenticeship opportunities through its partnership with Oban High School, with the Oban Bay Hotel team supporting fifth-year Home Economics pupils for several years by providing opportunities to gain professional experience alongside classroom learning.
This is where Noah Porter, now Food and Beverage Assistant at the Oban Bay Hotel, started his journey with Crerar Hotels, as his keen interest in hospitality and willingness to learn stood out amongst his class.
The programme offers young people a deep dive into the industry, culminating in pupils planning and delivering their own themed event at the hotel from start to finish. Under the expert coaching of the hotel team, students manage every detail, from designing menus and crafting mocktails to handling décor, service, and final evaluations.
It was during these sessions that Noah first stood out for his genuine interest and quiet determination, earning himself an apprenticeship with the award-winning hotel group. Noah is close to nearing the completion of his second year with SDC Learn, and in his supervisory year (Level 7), he is developing essential leadership skills, including team awareness and organisation. Noah’s success is a testament to the partnership between Oban Bay Hotel, Oban High School, and SDC Learn.
Antoinette Luckhoff, FA Hospitality Teacher, said, “It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Noah’s journey from a dedicated pupil in my classroom to a valued professional, and seeing him flourish is incredibly rewarding and a true reflection of his exceptional work ethic.”
Martin Goldie, SDC Learn Tutor, said, “When Noah first began his Level 5 qualification, he was a shy and quiet young man who was still finding his confidence. It has been great to watch him grow over the past year and now see him progress into his supervisory Level 7.
“The structure of the apprenticeship, combined with the outstanding support from the team at Oban Bay Hotel, has allowed Noah to truly thrive in the workplace environment. He has developed not only his technical ability, but also his confidence, communication skills and leadership potential.
“I’m excited to continue supporting him through this next stage of his hospitality journey and to see how he navigates the challenges ahead. This is only the beginning for Noah, and I have no doubt he has a very bright future in the industry.
“By investing in young people, Oban Bay Hotel is turning local potential into long-term careers. Noah’s story serves as a powerful example for other young people in Scotland who may be unsure of their next steps, and the vital link between education and the hospitality and tourism industries.”
Noah added, “To anyone out there like me, who was maybe quiet and a little unsure, I can highly recommend doing a Modern Apprenticeship. Not only has it pushed me outside my comfort zone, but it has also provided me with the skills and confidence I needed in life, not only the workplace.”
