The Government has launched a new Enjoy Summer Safely campaign as part of the UK’s coronavirus response. The campaign celebrates the opening of key businesses and aims to encourage people to go back to the things they have missed, as long as they follow the COVID-19 secure guidelines wherever they are.

This includes urging the public to do their part in helping businesses stay open and getting life back to normal safely, by adhering to four key behaviours:

  • Maintaining good hygiene with regular hand washing and cleaning
  • Limiting contact with friends and family
  • Keeping a safe distance from others by staying 2 metres apart where possible
  • Self-isolating if you or anyone in your household has symptoms.

The campaign is supported by leading brands across the country who have come together to promote the Enjoy Summer Safely messaging as part of their communications and advertising. This includes Boots, BT, Carex, Cif, Compare the Market, Dettol, Domestos, Dove, EE, Greene King, JD Wetherspoons, McDonald’s, Mastercard, Mitchell & Butlers, Nationwide, O2 and Vodaphone.

The campaign was launched on 3 July with the Enjoy Summer Safely logo projected on London’s Piccadilly Circus big screen alongside the brands supporting the initiative. A TV advert also aired on ITV, alongside radio, print and out-of-home advertising.

The advert features the reopening of real cafes, restaurants, bookshops, hair salons and other places people have been unable to access since the outbreak began. It welcomes the public back to some of the things they’ve missed during lockdown and shows examples of safety measures that are now in place in different settings and finishes by encouraging the nation to go out and enjoy what they love, safely.

Business Secretary Alok Sharma said, “Allowing pubs, restaurants and hairdressers to open from this weekend is another step in our plan to kickstart our economy recovery in a safe manner. I’m proud to stand with some of the UK’s most trusted and loved brands in launching the Enjoy Summer Safely campaign, encouraging customers to return to the high street, but in a way that puts safety first.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said, “It is vital, as we carefully remove the restrictions that have had to be in place, that people act safely. Social distancing must be followed, or the virus will return. It’s only possible to enjoy summer if we all do that safely.

“I’m grateful for all the businesses who are playing their part and have contributed to this campaign. Our new campaign marks an important moment in reminding everybody of the part we all need to play in limiting the transmission of the virus. It is so important to observe the rules that businesses have put in place. If you have symptoms, please get tested now to help stop the spread of the virus and protect the people around you.”
