Dundee Heritage Trust announces Discovery Mast Climb

Dundee Heritage Trust (DHT), the charity behind Discovery Point and Verdant Works Museum, have announced a new experience allowing visitors to explore RRS Discovery in a new way, by scaling over 75 feet up the historic ship’s fore-mast, before zip-lining back to the Dundee waterfront.

Designed in collaboration with Zone Events, the Discovery Mast Climb offers a way for audiences from all over the world to re-engage with RRS Discovery and its enduring legacy of adventure and exploration. The course has been carefully designed to emulate the real conditions and challenges faced by Scott, Shackleton and the crew of RRS Discovery during their Antarctic expedition 124 years ago, from climbing authentic rigging to navigating the same narrow pathways above deck. It is hoped that participants will gain a sense of the physical effort, exposure and perspective experienced by the original explorers on their journeys South.

The Discovery Mast Climb is the first of its kind in Scotland, with the Cutty Sark and SS Great Britain being the only other historic vessels in the UK offering a similar experience. The experience was launched by Dan Snow and Lorraine Kelly, two of DHT’s Patrons.

Ashleigh Pink, Commercial Director at Dundee Heritage Trust said, “This isn’t just another heights challenge – this is a completely unique way to encounter one of Scotland’s most iconic ships. The Discovery Mast Climb delivers a powerful mix of history, heritage and heart-pounding excitement. Unlike any other attraction in this part of the UK, it allows people to physically step into the story of polar exploration, while taking in unforgettable views of the city and the River Tay.”

Tickets will be released later this summer for public dates in the autumn. DHT encourages anyone who is interested to sign up to their mailing list, to be the first to find out when tickets go live.
