English Heritage property Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Northumberland has undergone a major project to conserve and share its stories.

The striking hall, which was inspired by the Greek and Italian architecture that Sir Charles Monck – the 6th baronet who managed the estate –  saw on his honeymoon, has undergone key conservation works and essential repairs to the roof. Visitors can experience the imposing Pillar Hall, the coffered ceiling and elaborate decoration in the reception rooms. Groups can pre-book guided tours of the hall to delve deeper into its history.

The 30 acres of gardens which surround the hall offer something new to discover every season, and have been recently revived by gardener Dan Pearson, who restored the gardens’ individuality while maintaining its historic character. Visitors are invited to enjoy the Jurrastic feeling Quarry Garden inspired by Sir Charles Monck’s travels, which has its own micro climate, a mixture of exotic ferns, umbrella-like Gunnera leaves and over 40 species of lilies. Recently installed information panels offer visitors more insight into some of the plants that thrive in this landscape. For a more in depth look at the gardens, groups are invited to book a guided tour with the gardens team.

At the medieval castle, visitors can explore the maze rooms and rare traces of elaborate medieval wall paintings, offering glimpses into the 18th-century life, including an ancient cooking range and fireplace. The whole ensemble is the creation of the Middleton family over more than seven centuries, and visitors can watch their story unfold through an animation in the castle told by the Wild Man.

Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the old Coach House, recently transformed into a welcoming sustainable cafe. Catering packages are available for groups in the Coach House Cafe and the Belsay Tea Room.

Goups of 11 or more visiting Belsay Hall will receive a 15% English Heritage discount, plus one free place per group for a driver and a tour leader (who do not count towards group numbers). To book, please email [email protected] For any questions, please contact Anna Hanson.
