Oxford Academia Tour: Ceremony, Scholarship and Tradition has been developed in partnership between the Bodleian Libraries and Oxford University Event Venues, offering visitors exclusive access to the Examination Schools, the Bodleian Libraries and the Sheldonian Theatre, three landmark buildings at the heart of Oxford’s academic and ceremonial life. Created for group travel and special-interest visitors, the tour provides a unique opportunity to explore the places where generations of students have studied, debated, graduated and celebrated academic achievement.
The tour begins at the Examination Schools on Oxford’s High Street, the University’s principal examination venue and one of its most impressive Victorian buildings. Guests then follow a guided walk through Oxford’s historic streets to the Bodleian Libraries, where they explore the medieval Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library, before concluding at the Sheldonian Theatre, Sir Christopher Wren’s first major architectural commission and the University’s ceremonial hall. The tour culminates with panoramic views of Oxford’s famous dreaming spires from the Sheldonian cupola.
This new experience brings together locations that collectively tell the story of Oxford’s traditions of learning, scholarship and ceremony, offering insight into more than eight centuries of University history.
Jake Firth, Head of Visitor Experience at the Bodleian Libraries, said, “We are excited to be partnering with the Sheldonian Theatre and Examination Schools on this unique new tour, which explores some of the most iconic spaces at the University of Oxford and offers visitors an authentic insight into the student experience. The Bodleian Libraries, Sheldonian Theatre and Examination Schools play such an important role in students’ lives here in Oxford and it is truly special to have a tour that encapsulates this.”
Ellen Brady, Deputy Head of Oxford University Event Venues, said, ” We are delighted to be working with the Bodleian Libraries to bring these three remarkable spaces together for the first time. Each building has its own unique story but together they offer a deeper insight into the traditions that have shaped life at Oxford for centuries. This tour allows visitors to step inside some of the University’s most significant spaces and gain a greater appreciation of the history, ceremony and scholarship that continue to define Oxford today.”
The Oxford Academia Tour is available for groups of up to 14 guests and operates on selected weekdays, subject to University activity and venue availability. Optional lunch and afternoon tea packages are available at the Ashmolean Museum Rooftop Restaurant, allowing groups to extend their visit and enjoy one of Oxford’s most distinctive dining settings.
