Crerar Hotels reveal their prime destinations to de-stress

Crerar Hotels have announced their prime destinations for relaxing. See below for the list they have created for the best places for a ‘Calmcation’ trip in Scotland this winter.

Nairn

Inverness offers a selection of beaches that attract visitors from across Scotland and beyond. The area is recognised for its coastal access and views across the Moray Firth. Nairn is home to two established beaches – Nairn Beach and Nairn’s East Beach – both extending for several miles along the coastline. Visitors can experience sunsets over the Moray Firth and, at certain times of year, the Northern Lights may be visible.

For those looking to enjoy the seaside, Golf View Hotel & Spa is located right on the coastline. The hotel is home to the award-winning Coast Spa, which offers views out over the Moray Firth to the Black Isle and beyond, including the outdoor thermal experience.

Dunkeld

The historic town of Dunkeld is a gateway to the Highlands and is set on the grand River Tay. The Atholl Woods circuit on the north side of Dunkeld has several points along the way, including Cally Loch, Polney Loch, and Mill Dam. On the Hermitage and Braan Path, walk within the sheltered woods along the River Braan to Ossian’s Hall in The Hermitage, where you can view the Black Linn Falls.

After exploring the countryside, head to Dunkeld House Hotel, and indulge in a specially tailored ishga spa treatment. Dunkeld House is also home to an array of on-site activities, including clay pigeon shooting and the Land Rover Experience.

Isle of Mull

The Isle of Mull is a popular choice for those seeking fresh air, open space and fewer crowds, the island’s capital Tobermory offers a colourful backdrop to those looking for a fun trip away. Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa is positioned just five minutes from Craignure Ferry Terminal, making it the ideal place for calmcation seekers to base themselves while exploring the island. As well as a range of rooms and suites inspired by the landscape of Mull, the hotel is also home to the unique Wilderness Deck – a private spa retreat for visitors to take in the island in their own sanctuary.

Inveraray

Located on the banks of the stunning Loch Fyne, Inveraray is known for its Georgian architecture and visitor attractions, including Inveraray Jail and Inveraray Castle and gardens. The loch itself offers boat trips, kayaking and fishing.

The luxury Loch Fyne Hotel & Spa is situated right on the banks of the loch and is the ideal for those seeking a calmcation focused on wellness, with stand-out spa facilities and calming interiors in the bedrooms, inspired by the hotel’s surroundings.

Pitlochry

A well-connected Highland destination, Pitlochry continues to attract visitors seeking a stay in the region. This historic town is home to a range of accommodation options, including Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa, which offers luxury facilities and services for guests. The hotel is home to the 3 AA-Rosette awarded Sandemans restaurant, which is renowned for its seven-course tasting menu, where guests are encouraged to take their time and savour each bite and sip. A special addition to any stay or visit would be an afternoon tea, served in an outdoor dining pod with views of Loch Faskally and Ben Vrackie beyond.

Oban

Scotland is home to numerous wild swimming locations, with the coastal waters off Oban providing a popular destination for this activity. Cold-water wild swimming offers perks like boosted mood and mental resilience from endorphin release, improved circulation, a stronger immune system, reduced stress and anxiety, and increased alertness, plus physical fitness benefits, all while connecting with nature and building confidence. It triggers the release of stress hormones and dopamine, leading to feelings of euphoria, while strengthening the body’s resilience to the cold. After a brisk dip, head over to the Oban Bay Hotel to enjoy a fresh catch straight away, while taking in the surroundings in the sea-facing conservatory.

Grasmere

For those looking for adventure and relaxation, the next stop should be the Lake District. At the centre of the Lakes. There is the village of Grasmere with scenery for hiking and lakeside activities, literary history such as Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and the place to unwind and recharge at Daffodil Hotel & Spa.

Guests can enjoy the calmcation by taking advantage of the four-star hotel’s thermal pool, tepidarium, sauna and steam room and indulgent spa treatments. There are mini treatments to facials and luxury body treatments.

Ballater

Located within the Cairngorms National Park, this Royal Deeside village is known for its links to the Royal Family and outdoor access, with plenty of opportunities to explore the Balmoral Castle and Estate and Glen Muik, as well as the Cambus o’May forest and the local railway museum.

For those looking to sample a regal visit to the area, the Balmoral Arms is the place to stay. With rooms and suites, this dog-friendly stay is a resting spot after a day of exploring the area.

Carolyn Carrington, General Manager, Golf View Hotel & Spa, said, “When checking guests in at this time of the year, we often speak to those who are looking to turn off and relax, purposely prioritising genuine restoration over sightseeing and busy schedules. Whether it’s long walks along the country’s stunning coastlines, wildlife spotting on a rural island or taking a dip in waters set against Scotland’s incredible scenery, we can offer a true off-grid staycation.”
