Visit Worcestershire is collaborating with Museums Worcestershire for the 375th anniversary of the end of the English Civil War. Groups are invited to discover more about this moment in English history at The Commandery, one of Worcester’s oldest buildings, which played a central role as the Royalist Headquarters during the Battle of Worcester.
Throughout the year, there is a 10% discount on admission for group visits of 10 people or more. In addition, visitors can book a 1-hour tour led by a team member for £85 per group.
During this special anniversary year, there is an exclusive offer for Civil War group tour ‘The Commandery’s Civil War: The Battle of Worcester unfolded’. This one-hour guided tour will take guests back to the dramatic final chapter of the English Civil War as they discover how the decisive clash of 1651 unfolded across the city whilst they stand within the headquarters used by the Royalist forces.
Visitors can come face-to-face with the haunting death mask of Oliver Cromwell, discover who was buried beneath the floorboards of The Commandery, and hear gripping stories of courage, defeat, and escape that helped shape the nation’s future. They can also take in views towards Fort Royal Hill, where fierce fighting raged during the Battle of Worcester. This tour brings 17th-century Worcester vividly back to life.
For groups visiting without a guided tour, they can still enjoy a special free 10-minute introductory talk focusing on the building’s pivotal role in the Battle of Worcester. Expert guides will set the scene for how this building became the Royalist headquarters in 1651 and reveal why The Commandery remains one of Worcester’s most important historic sites.
Megan Keary, Learning & Outreach Co-ordinator, said, “We’re excited to offer these new opportunities for groups visiting The Commandery during this 375th anniversary year. Whether you have a passion for history, a fascination with the English Civil War, or just enjoy a relaxing day at heritage properties, there’s something for everyone, and we look forward to more people discovering The Commandery’s civil war story through a group visit.”
The Commandery is situated in the heart of Worcester, alongside the Worcester and Birmingham canal. It is a few minutes’ walk from the shops and restaurants of the city centre, with views of Worcester Cathedral and Fort Royal Hill.
Little Al’s Kitchen at The Commandery offers a range of treats and refreshments from coffee and cake to seasonal lunch bites. Guests are also welcome to bring their own picnics and make the most of the gardens, with blankets provided.
