Inbound Tourism Facts and Statistics

Tourism is one of the largest industries in the UK. It is our 5th largest export earner, on par with the automotive and pharmaceutical industries.

A recent study by Deloitte estimated tourism is worth £127 billion to the UK economy, equivalent to 9% of the UK's GDP. 

In 2015, a record 36.1 million visitors came to the UK, spending just over £22 billion.

Full figures for inbound tourism in 2016 will be released in May 2017, however it is forecast that the UK received 36.7 million visits last year, with visitors spending £22.3 billion.

It is estimated that in 2017 the number of visits to the UK will rise to 38.1 million, with visitors spending £24.1 billion.

The industry is the UK's 3rd largest employer - 1 in 3 new jobs created since 2010 are in tourism.

In 2015 the top 5 inbound tourism markets for number of visits were: France, the USA, Germany, the Republic of Ireland, and Spain.

In 2015 the top 5 inbound tourism markets for total visitor spend were: the USA, France, Germany, Australia, and Spain.

London is a key destination for inbound visitors to the UK. In 2015, London received 18.6 million visitors who spent £11.9 billion - this represents 54% of all inbound visitor spending.

The rest of England attracted 15.2 million international visitors, who spent an estimated £7.4 billion. Scotland welcomed 2.6 million visitors, who spent £1.8 billion.
