AIR PASSENGER DUTY

The UK currently has the highest rate of Air Passenger Duty (APD) in the EU which puts UK business and trade at a massive disadvantage compared to other EU countries like Germany, France and Ireland. This makes no economic sense when we need to be expanding global trade links as Brexit gets ever closer.

Furthermore, in September 2017, the World Economic Forum ranked the UK 133rd out of 136 countries in their global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index for air passenger tax and airport charges.

UKinbound is an active supporter of the A Fair Tax on Flying campaign and to date the Association has helped to secure the banding reform introduced by the Government at the 2014 Budget, the scrapping of APD on children’s flights (for under 12s from 1st May 2015 and under 16s from 1st March 2016) and the freezing of short and long haul APD rates for economy passengers in the November 2017 Budget.

In June 2018 both A Fair Tax on Flying and the Tourism Alliance (of which UKinbound are a member) submitted responses to the Treasury’s Call for Evidence on the impact of VAT and APD on tourism in Northern Ireland. The submissions can be found at the links below.
